Estonia Becomes 24th Member of CERN, a Key Scientific Institution in Europe

Estonia ratifies full membership in CERN, granting complete access to the European Organization for Nuclear Research. The move allows Estonian companies, scientists, and teachers to benefit from one of Europe’s main research organizations. This decision makes Estonia the first former Soviet republic to become a member of CERN, joining 23 other countries in the organization based in Geneva.

Minister of Economic Affairs and Information Technology, Tiit Riisalo, highlights the significance of full membership for Estonia, removing financial barriers and providing opportunities for participation in tenders and employment contracts. This development is crucial for promoting cooperation in fundamental nuclear research and advancing high-tech knowledge transfer for Estonian entrepreneurs.

Estonia’s formal membership will be finalized upon presenting its letter of accession to the director-general of UNESCO, the agency overseeing educational, scientific, and cultural matters. CERN, established in 1954, also counts Israel as its only non-European full member. With this milestone, Estonia looks forward to leveraging CERN’s resources and expertise to strengthen its scientific and technological capabilities for the benefit of its citizens and the broader European scientific community.
