French elections: A breakdown of the voters for each political party

The recent legislative election in France saw a record turnout of 67%, with the far-right National Rally (RN) emerging as the top vote-getter at 33%. The left-wing New Popular Front (NFP) followed with 29% while President Macron’s centrist coalition lagged in third place. A survey by Ipsos revealed that the RN attracted voters of all ages except those under 34 and over 70, with the centrist coalition winning the senior vote. The younger vote primarily went to the NFP. The disadvantaged and popular classes overwhelmingly supported the RN, signaling a trend of growing discontent amongst left-wing voters due to feelings of abandonment and betrayal by mainstream parties. Dissatisfaction with Macron led to a third of dissatisfied voters supporting the NFP, while a majority of very dissatisfied voters chose the RN. The RN has been seen as both a protest vote and a vote of ideological adherence. Jordan Bardella’s strong social media presence, particularly on TikTok, has contributed to the party’s appeal to younger voters. The Ipsos survey shed light on the key demographics and voting patterns of the French electorate in the recent elections, indicating a shift in voter preferences towards populist and far-right parties.
