Central Philippine Island Evacuates Hundreds as Volcano Erupts

A powerful explosion at Mount Kanlaon in the central Philippines caused more than 700 residents to flee to evacuation camps. The eruption triggered sirens and forced hundreds to seek safety in government trucks. No casualties were reported, but authorities raised the alert level to two out of five, indicating a “moderate level of volcanic unrest.” President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. confirmed that 796 people from 170 families had been relocated to evacuation centers in Canlaon and surrounding areas. The eruption prompted the closure of resorts in the city to prevent injuries in case of another eruption. Police also enforced a no-entry regulation in a 4-kilometer danger zone around the volcano. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that the eruption scattered ash up to 10 kilometers away. The future activity of Mount Kanlaon remains uncertain, as it has erupted multiple times in recent decades. The Philippines, located in the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” is prone to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and typhoons, making it one of the most disaster-prone nations in the world.
