The Massachusetts Department of Public Health recently detected Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in mosquitoes in Carver, marking the first time the virus has been found in the state in 2024. The presence of EEE has increased the risk level to moderate in several communities in the area. While no human or animal cases have been reported so far this year, the department emphasized the seriousness and potential fatality of the virus based on past cases. In 2019, there were 12 human cases and six deaths in Massachusetts, which decreased to five cases and one death in 2020, with no reported cases in the subsequent years.
Public Health Commissioner Robbie Goldstein urged residents to take precautions to prevent mosquito bites in light of the recent findings. This includes wearing EPA-registered insect repellent containing DEET, permethrin, picaridin, or oil of lemon eucalyptus while outdoors. The department also recommended avoiding outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours, installing screens on windows and doors, and emptying standing water sources where mosquitoes can breed.
In response to the detection of EEE and West Nile virus in mosquitoes in Massachusetts, residents are urged to stay vigilant and take necessary steps to protect themselves from mosquito bites. By following these precautions and eliminating mosquito breeding grounds, individuals can reduce their risk of contracting EEE and other mosquito-borne illnesses.
