The lead investigator in the Karen Read case, Trooper Michael Proctor, has been transferred out of the local Detective’s Unit for “serious misconduct” in connection with the trial, as per a statement released by the Massachusetts State Police. Proctor had sent vulgar texts ridiculing Read and calling her names, which surfaced during the trial. Massachusetts State Police Colonel John E. Mawn condemned Proctor’s behavior and mentioned that the department is still investigating the matter. Proctor admitted that his comments were “unprofessional” but claimed they did not affect the case’s outcome. However, a significant part of Read’s defense was based on her belief that the local police department was framing her. The mistrial was announced recently, and the Norfolk County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that they will be retrying Read later this month.
