A recent poll conducted by the Pew Research Center has revealed that people in 34 countries have more confidence in President Joe Biden than his challenger in the 2020 election, former President Donald Trump. The poll found that a median of 43% of respondents trust Biden to do the right thing in world affairs, compared to 28% for Trump.
While confidence in Biden remains relatively high globally, faith in U.S. democracy as a model for other countries has declined. A median of 4 in 10 respondents across the surveyed nations believe that U.S. democracy used to be a good example but no longer is. Additionally, only 21% view U.S. democracy as a good example for other nations, while 22% say it never has been.
Despite a decrease in confidence in Biden’s handling of certain international issues, such as the Israel-Hamas conflict, he still received higher ratings than Trump. French President Emmanuel Macron registered the highest level of confidence among the five leaders rated in the survey, with Putin receiving the lowest.
Overall, confidence in Trump’s ability to do the right thing in world affairs was only slightly higher than that of Chinese President Xi Jinping across the 34 countries surveyed. Even in countries like Hungary and Tunisia, where confidence in Trump was higher than Biden, the former president did not receive strong endorsements.
Impressively, Biden received higher approval ratings for his handling of international issues, particularly in European nations.
