Founder of WordPerfect, Bruce Bastian, Passes Away at Age 76

WordPerfect Corporation co-founder and philanthropist, Bruce Bastian, passed away on June 16 at the age of 76. Bastian and his partner Alan Ashton were pioneers in developing software for personal computers in the 1980s and 1990s. Despite their success, Bastian faced inner turmoil as a closeted gay man in a predominately Mormon community.

It wasn’t until a business trip to Amsterdam in the late 1980s that Bastian came to terms with his sexuality. He later came out publicly, renounced his Mormon faith and became a major advocate for L.G.B.T.Q. causes. Bastian’s decision to support such causes strained his relationship with Ashton, who donated to anti-gay marriage initiatives.

The software company, WordPerfect, was eventually sold to Novell for $1.4 billion in 1994. Bastian left the company after the sale and focused on philanthropy, supporting arts and cultural programs, as well as L.G.B.T.Q. causes. Throughout his life, Bastian found comfort in being true to himself and urged others to follow their hearts despite the challenges they may face.

Bastian’s legacy lives on through his work in the software industry and his contributions to society. He is survived by his husband Clint Ford, his four sons, two sisters, a brother, and 14 grandchildren. In the end, Bastian’s journey from founding a successful technology company to becoming a philanthropic force in the L.G.B.T.Q. community showcases the power of authenticity and living one’s truth.
