Healey advises Biden to ‘thoughtfully consider’ his chances against Trump; Moulton joins in urging him to withdraw

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey has reportedly offered a brutally honest assessment of President Biden’s chances of winning reelection, stating that his political position is “irretrievable.” Despite praising Biden’s leadership in the past, Healey urged him to carefully evaluate if he remains the best hope to defeat Donald Trump. This comes as pressure mounts for Biden to step aside from some prominent Massachusetts politicians.

In a meeting with Democratic governors at the White House, Biden acknowledged the need for more sleep and fewer work hours but stated he was not planning on ending his candidacy. While the governors publicly rallied around Biden, the conversation about whether he should continue his candidacy was discussed lengthily during a call among the governors. US Representative Seth Moulton joined the voices calling for Biden to step aside, citing the need for new leaders to rise up against Trump.

As support for an alternative candidate grows within the Democratic establishment, Vice President Kamala Harris emerges as a prominent figure. Wealthy donors and prominent figures like Netflix co-founder Reed Hastings are preparing for the potential of a new candidate stepping in. A CNN poll showed that Harris would have a better chance at defeating Trump than Biden. While Moulton did not commit to a specific approach if Biden were to drop out, the possibility of a truncated primary process or direct nomination of Harris remains open.

The calls for Biden to consider stepping aside highlight a growing sense of concern and urgency within the Democratic party as the 2024 election approaches.
