Massachusetts police officers call for review of Mass State Police in response to waning confidence

The Massachusetts Association for Professional Law Enforcement (MAPLE) is calling for the formation of a “Blue Ribbon” commission to investigate the Mass State Police in light of multiple scandals. The agency has faced criticism and legal issues due to cases of malfeasance, including troopers charged with bribery and overtime abuse.

MAPLE had previously proposed a similar commission to Governor Charlie Baker and is now resubmitting the request to Governor Maura Healey. The goal of the commission would be to conduct a comprehensive review of the agency and address systemic problems in order to restore public confidence in the Mass State Police.

MAPLE’s president, Dennis Galvin, emphasized the importance of an impartial and thorough investigation, with the authority to compel witness testimony and access records. He also recommended that the hearings be open to the public and that commission appointees have minimal political ties.

The proposal comes in the wake of similar commissions in other cities addressing police corruption and brutality. Galvin stressed the urgency of the situation, stating that restoring public trust in the State Police is crucial for maintaining a legacy of fair and open government in Massachusetts.

The spokesperson for Governor Healey and the State Police did not immediately respond to the proposal, but MAPLE has expressed readiness to assist in any way necessary to ensure a transparent and effective review of the agency.
