The job description of school counselors has evolved significantly in recent years, encompassing not just academic counseling but also support for students interested in various post-high school options. This includes helping students navigate social-emotional issues both inside and outside of the school community.
The shortage of counselors is also affecting elementary schools, where counselors are tasked with teaching important life skills and preparing students for a variety of post-high school paths. Chronic student absenteeism, exacerbated by the pandemic, has become a significant challenge at every grade level.
To address the shortage, the Massachusetts School Counselor Association and other education groups are working on a multi-year plan to increase the number of school counselors in the state.
