The top political issue in Massachusetts continues to be housing.

A recent poll conducted by UMass Amherst/WCVB has revealed that housing affordability and shortage are the most pressing political issues in Massachusetts, with 34% of respondents highlighting it as their top concern. The survey, conducted between May 17 and 30, included responses from 700 people, and has a margin of error of 4.4%. Other noteworthy issues includes immigration, which garnered 18% of responses, while no other issue exceeded 9%.

The majority of respondents support various political proposals aimed at addressing the housing crisis, such as limiting rent increases, incentivizing developers to convert office buildings into housing, and creating zoning for new multi-family housing. Of those who attempted to purchase or rent a home in the past year, many reported struggles in finding suitable housing within their budget. Additionally, a significant number of respondents considered relocating out of Massachusetts, with New Hampshire, Florida, and the Carolinas being popular potential destinations.

Furthermore, the poll also indicated optimism regarding the state’s economy, with more favorable views of Massachusetts’ economic conditions compared to the national economy. Half of the respondents viewed Democratic control of constitutional offices and the legislature positively. Overall, the survey underscores the urgent need for governmental action to address the housing crisis in Massachusetts and the impact it has on the state’s residents.
