Bryan Mata shines in debut relief performance of 2024 ahead of roster cut off

Worcester – Red Sox pitching prospect Bryan Mata faces an important deadline as his current rehab assignment ends on July 15. The Red Sox must decide whether to place him on the major-league roster or risk losing him to waivers. Mata has faced injuries throughout his career, including Tommy John surgery in 2021, limiting his innings in the minors. He recently made his Triple-A debut, showcasing his skills in a relief appearance for the WooSox. Mata’s performance in the bullpen has raised questions about his future role – starter or reliever, as he possesses the talent for both. WooSox manager Billy Tracy praised Mata’s positive attitude and work ethic since rejoining the team.

In a recent game against the Mets, the WooSox secured a 4-0 victory behind strong pitching from Cooper Criswell and a two-run homer from Mickey Gasper. Criswell threw six scoreless innings, while Gasper contributed his eighth homer of the season. Pitcher Alex Speas made his WooSox debut, escaping a jam in the seventh inning to preserve the shutout. Eddy Alvarez’s solo home run broke the scoreless tie in the fifth.

On a lighter note, the WooSox added patches to their uniforms in honor of late owner Larry Lucchino. Additionally, player Jamie Westbrook introduced an ant farm into the clubhouse, giving rise to experiments and discussions among players and staff. The WooSox will enjoy a brief hiatus before returning to face the Rochester Red Wings in a six-game homestand. Justin Hagenman is set to start the first game on Tuesday night.
