Former U.S. ambassador excommunicated by Vatican

The Vatican has excommunicated Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, its former ambassador to the U.S., after finding him guilty of schism. The decision comes after Vigano’s public refusal to recognize and submit to the Supreme Pontiff, rejection of communion with members of the church, and denial of the legitimacy of the Second Vatican Council. Vigano, known for his conservative views and criticism of Pope Francis, has become a polarizing figure within the Catholic Church.

Despite initially being supported by the Vatican and U.S. church hierarchies, Vigano’s extreme views on conspiracy theories and his schismatic beliefs alienated many. The crime of schism, for which he was excommunicated, involves withdrawing submission to the pope or from the communion of Catholics under him. Excommunication means Vigano is outside communion with the church and cannot celebrate or receive its sacraments.

Vigano’s schism declaration was expected, as the Vatican had informed him of the penal process against him last month. The archbishop, who has not been seen publicly since before 2018, defied the decision, calling it an honor and refusing to defend himself. Vigano’s controversial actions, including inviting Kim Davis to meet Pope Francis and making unfounded accusations against the pontiff, have led to his excommunication. While initially supported by some bishops, his extreme views have distanced many from him, highlighting the polarization within the Catholic Church.
