Starmer announces ministerial team following decisive UK election victory | Political News

Rachel Reeves has made history as the UK’s first female finance minister, a position in which she aims to grow the economy while maintaining fiscal discipline. David Lammy, a trailblazing lawmaker, has been appointed as foreign secretary, pledging to work towards an immediate ceasefire in Israel’s conflict with Gaza and the release of remaining hostages.

Labour Party leader Keir Starmer has also named his ministerial team, with Angela Rayner appointed as deputy prime minister, Yvette Cooper as home secretary, and Lisa Nandy as culture secretary. Former Labour leader Ed Miliband has been named energy secretary, with other key positions filled by Pat McFadden, John Healey, Wes Streeting, and Bridget Phillipson among others.

Rayner, who grew up in public housing and left school early as a young mother, brings her experience as a trade union official to her role in levelling up, housing, and communities. Cooper, who previously served in Gordon Brown’s Cabinet, will now oversee the Home Office. Each member of the team brings a wealth of experience and diverse backgrounds to their roles.

The appointments mark a new era for the UK government, as Starmer’s administration promises to bring fresh perspectives and policies to address the nation’s challenges. With a focus on supporting economic growth, achieving diplomatic solutions to international conflicts, and promoting social justice, the new ministerial team aims to lead the country towards a brighter future.
