A group of Democratic lawmakers in Massachusetts is calling on President Joe Biden to step aside and allow a new generation of leaders to take the reins. The coalition of seven lawmakers, including state Sens. Joanne Comerford, Jamie Eldridge, Paul Feeney, Patricia Jehlen, John Keenan, Jason Lewis, and Michael Moore, signed a joint statement urging Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. They argue that Biden is not capable of effectively campaigning against Donald Trump and believe that a new nominee is needed to inject excitement and energy into the Democratic Party.
The lawmakers point to polling data showing Biden trailing Trump in key battleground states and concerns among congressional Democrats that the party could suffer losses in November if Biden remains in the race. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer and U.S. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have also expressed their concerns to Biden about potential Democratic losses if he continues to run.
Despite facing questions about his age and fitness, Biden has insisted that his mental acuity is good and that he is staying in the race. However, the Massachusetts lawmakers believe that selecting a new Democratic nominee will be beneficial for the party and its voters, particularly young people. They argue that there will be plenty of time after the convention for the new nominee to run a winning campaign and defeat Trump.
