The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has announced plans to introduce battery-powered electric trains on the Fairmount Commuter Rail line by 2028. These battery electric multiple unit trains (BEMUs) will provide more frequent and reliable service while reducing emissions, with an estimated saving of 1.6 million gallons of fuel and eliminating 17,700 tons of carbon dioxide per year. The hybrid trains will charge their batteries when connected to overhead wires and automatically switch to battery power for quieter and smoother rides.
Governor Maura Healey praised the plan, stating that the electrification of the Fairmount Line aligns with the state’s climate goals. The MBTA Board approved $54 million for the project, with Keolis Commuter Services proposing the integration of BEMUs in 2023. The CEO of Keolis Commuter Services, Abdellah Chajai, expressed excitement about introducing decarbonized service to the Fairmount Line community.
The new electric trains aim to enhance the commuting experience for passengers by delivering faster and more reliable service. With the approval of the project, the MBTA looks forward to rolling out the new trains and advancing Massachusetts towards a more sustainable future.
