The Federal Trade Commission is cautioning young adults about potential scams involving individuals claiming to be artists on social media. Senior attorney Larissa Bungo warned that those who offer to pay for permission to paint your photo are likely attempting to take your money. The scam typically involves receiving a message from someone on social media offering to pay thousands of dollars to use your photo, sending a fake check that you deposit, taking some money out to send to the supposed artist for supplies, and then promising to reimburse any funds sent back. Bungo advises only depositing checks from known and trusted individuals to avoid falling victim to these scams. She emphasized that even if a check appears real and funds show up in your account, it could still be fake and you could end up owing the bank money if the check is ultimately rejected. Young adults are urged to be skeptical of offers from unknown individuals online and to take precautions to protect themselves from financial scams.
