Southwick Select Board member Jason Perron did not violate any conflict-of-interest laws when he called for a School Committee member to resign in February, according to the town’s attorney Benjamin Coyle. Coyle found that Perron’s comments and emails did not violate any laws, despite concerns raised by critics.
Perron had called for the resignation of a member of the Southwick-Tolland-Granville Regional School Committee whose child was allegedly involved in a racist incident at Southwick Regional School. Perron made his statement using his official town email, and his wife was a candidate running for School Committee at the time, leading to concerns about a potential conflict of interest.
The inquiry into Perron’s actions was requested by Select Board member Diane Gale, who received Coyle’s response on June 28. Coyle’s findings suggest that Perron’s actions were within the bounds of the law, and that no conflict of interest occurred.
With this conclusion, it appears that Perron will not face any consequences for his actions in calling for the resignation of the School Committee member. The situation had created some controversy within the town, but Coyle’s findings have now provided clarity on the matter.
