In response to President Joe Biden’s announcement that he would not be running for reelection in 2024, Massachusetts Republican leaders are projecting confidence in their ability to win the election. The Massachusetts GOP stated that Democrats’ scare tactics will not distract from their failed policies and that Americans want a shift towards the Republican ticket. Former state representative Geoff Diehl expressed relief at Biden’s withdrawal but cautioned against setting a precedent of canceling a sitting president’s reelection campaign by party insiders. Diehl also shared commentary from high-profile GOP figures, including Elon Musk who is reportedly donating to Donald Trump’s campaign.
Diehl reposted accusations from Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis claiming that Vice President Kamala Harris was complicit in hiding Biden’s decline and former congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard’s assertion that a “deep state” led by Hillary Clinton is calling the shots. Massachusetts GOP Chair Amy Carnevale and former Bristol County sheriff Thomas Hodgson both supported Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race, claiming he is not fit to continue as president. Carnevale stated that Republicans are agnostic about who the Democratic nominee is, while Hodgson called on Biden to resign from the presidency due to cognitive challenges.
With Biden out of the race, the political landscape for the 2024 election is already shifting, with endorsements for Harris coming from prominent Massachusetts Democrats like Sens. Warren and Markey, Attorney General Campbell, Reps. Clark, Pressley, and Trahan, and Boston Mayor Wu. As the race continues to develop, the stage is set for a contentious presidential election with both parties gearing up to fight for victory.
