Former Olympian and track coach Conrad Mainwaring has changed his plea to guilty in an alleged child sex abuse case and has been sentenced to prison. Mainwaring is accused of sexually abusing nine children at a sports camp in Berkshire County in the 1970s. These allegations came to light after an ESPN investigation in 2019, leading to more than 50 men coming forward with similar claims.
During his sentencing in Berkshire Superior Court, Mainwaring plead guilty to all charges and was sentenced to prison with certain conditions, including probation and registration as a sex offender. The victims, some as young as 11 years old, were “groomed” by Mainwaring up to and through college, according to impact statements read during the hearing.
Berkshire County District Attorney Timothy Shugrue expressed gratitude towards the survivors and their families for their bravery and perseverance throughout the legal process. Shugrue emphasized the importance of breaking the silence around abuse and commended the survivors for coming forward to seek justice.
Shugrue also recognized the efforts of Attorney Megan Tesoniero, State Police Captain Stephen Jones, journalist Mike Kessler, ESPN, and journalist Mark Fainaru-Wada for their roles in the investigation and bringing Mainwaring to justice. The District Attorney highlighted the need to hold perpetrators of child abuse accountable and emphasized the dedication of all parties involved in the case.
