Keir Starmer has condemned the violent riots in Southport on Tuesday night, promising that those responsible will face the full force of the law. The riots started after far-right protesters attacked a mosque and clashed with police following a knife attack that killed three children. Merseyside police reported that 22 officers were injured, with eight sustaining serious injuries such as fractures and concussions. Three police dogs were also injured.
Police struggled to bring the disorder under control, eventually implementing enhanced stop and search powers and dispersal orders. Assistant Chief Constable Alex Goss appealed for information or video footage to identify and arrest those responsible for the violence. The protest turned violent as protesters barricaded streets, threw missiles at police, and attacked a mosque.
The violence occurred in the aftermath of a tragic knife attack that claimed the lives of three children and injured several others. Following the attack, false information spread on social media, causing further tension. This was condemned by Home Secretary Yvette Cooper, who called the attacks on police officers in Southport “appalling.”
