Live Coverage of Paris Olympic Games 2024: Day Five Includes Triathlons, Diving, Rowing, and More

The Paris Games’ women’s triathlon had an exciting start, with defending champion Flora Duffy of Bermuda leading the swimming leg. Duffy established an early lead, with Bianca Seregni of Italy in second place. The current in the Seine river made for a challenging swim, with some athletes struggling against the strong current.

After the swimming portion, Duffy continued to lead into the cycling leg, where she extended her lead. The chasing pack, including triathletes from France, Germany, and Great Britain, struggled to catch up to Duffy. French supporters lined the route to cheer on their home stars, including Emma Lombardi and Cassandre Beaugrand, who were part of the top ten.

The women’s triathlon course showcased the sights of Paris city center, with a 1500m swim in the Seine, a 40km bike ride through Paris, and a 10km run to finish. American athlete Taylor Knibb made headlines for competing in both the triathlon and road cycling time trial events, a rare feat in modern Olympics.

In other events, the women’s football tournament saw defending gold medallists Canada facing challenges after a penalty deduction, while the men’s football tournament had tensions rising between France and Argentina. The competition continued to heat up as both countries prepared for a quarter-final match.
