Nine out of ten of the fastest growing cities in the nation are in Texas.

Between 2020 and 2023, Texas dominated the list of the top 10 fastest growing U.S. cities, with 9 out of 10 cities located in the state. The U.S. Census Bureau collected data on towns and cities with populations over 20,000 during this period, with Texas seeing a significant increase in residents moving into the state as a major contributing factor to its population growth. Other factors such as international migration, birth rates, and death rates also play a role in a state’s population growth.

The fastest growing city in the U.S. during this period was Celina, Texas, which saw a 143% increase in population. A community engagement survey in 2022 revealed that around 9 out of 10 residents rated Celina positively, citing high quality of life and economic health as reasons. The top 10 fastest growing cities also saw significant population increases, while other cities like New York experienced population declines as residents relocated to other areas, particularly in the South.

The South region of the U.S. experienced the fastest population growth in 2023, with counties in the region seeing faster growth compared to previous years. About 67% of the counties in the South experienced population gains in 2023, contributing to the region’s overall growth. Southern states grew by over 1.4 million people during this time, accounting for 87% of the nation’s growth in 2023. The South has consistently experienced year-to-year net domestic migration and remains the most populous region in the U.S.
