Red Sox Shake Up Roster with 4 Moves, Including Call-Up of Infielder for MLB Debut

The Red Sox have announced four roster moves ahead of Wednesday’s game against the Mariners. Infielder Nick Sogard will be making his MLB debut after being promoted from Triple-A Worcester. Jamie Westbrook is being optioned to Worcester, reliever Yohan Ramirez is being designated for assignment, and reliever Lucas Sims, acquired in a trade with the Reds, will be activated.

Ramirez, claimed off waivers from the Dodgers, spent just one day on the active roster and pitched in Tuesday’s game, allowing three runs in 1 ⅓ innings. Sogard, acquired from the Rays in February 2021, has been performing well in Triple-A, batting .279 with 12 homers, 54 RBIs, and 10 stolen bases in 89 games.

Coming from a baseball-rich family, Sogard’s cousin Eric Sogard played 11 major league seasons, his brother Alex is a baseball coach at Wright State University, and he is the nephew of former All-Star Steve Sax and Red Sox player Dave Sax. The 26-year-old switch-hitter has an .824 OPS against righties and an .812 OPS against left-handers.

The Red Sox are hoping that Sogard’s performance in the minors will translate to success in the majors as they continue to make adjustments to their roster. Fans will be eager to see how the young infielder will adapt to the big leagues and contribute to the team’s success.
