Springfield city officials have opened cooling centers in response to high heat and humidity expected to last through at least Friday. Health and Human Services Commissioner Helen Caulton-Harris emphasized the importance of taking preventive measures to avoid heat stress, especially for the elderly. Residents are urged to stay out of the sun, drink plenty of water, check on elderly neighbors, and ensure pets have access to shade and water.
In addition to cooling centers, the city has various spray parks, pools, and swimming areas available for residents to stay cool. Mayor Domenic J. Sarno directed residents to the city’s website for a full list of locations.
