The Pentagon has announced plans to bolster U.S. military presence in the Middle East to defend Israel against potential attacks by Iran and its proxies. This decision was made in response to escalating violence in the region, including recent attacks by Israel on Hamas and Hezbollah leaders. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered the deployment of a fighter jet squadron to the Middle East, along with maintaining an aircraft carrier in the region. Additional ballistic missile defense-capable cruisers and destroyers will also be sent to the European and Middle East regions, with plans to increase land-based missile defense weapons.
President Joe Biden made a promise to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to provide military support against ballistic missile and drone threats. The U.S. forces intercepted missiles and drones fired by Iran in April, and Iran has threatened retaliation following recent attacks on Hamas and Hezbollah leaders. The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier strike group will be sent to the Middle East, replacing the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group, to serve as a deterrent against Iran.
The Pentagon has not disclosed the specific location of the fighter jet squadron or the type of missile defense systems to be deployed. The U.S. has maintained a consistent warship presence in the region, including destroyers and amphibious ready groups. Additional Navy destroyers are expected to move to the Mediterranean Sea. Biden reaffirmed his commitment to Israel’s security against all threats from Iran, including its proxies Hamas, Hezbollah, and the Houthis. The Pentagon’s decision reflects ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of U.S. troops and support Israel in the face of regional threats.
