Algeria’s Imane Khelif secured the country’s first Olympic boxing medal since 2000 after defeating Hungary’s Luca Anna Hamori in the welterweight quarterfinals at the Paris Games. Khelif, along with Taiwanese boxer Lin Yu-ting, has been at the center of a gender dispute following their disqualification from the 2023 World Championships for failing eligibility rules.
Despite the controversy, Khelif dominated the bout against Hamori, winning by unanimous decision and earning a spot in the semifinals where she will face Janjaem Suwannapheng of Thailand. Khelif’s emotional victory was cheered on by Algerian fans in attendance at the North Paris Arena.
While facing criticism and opposition, Khelif’s father expressed pride in his daughter’s success, emphasizing that she has always been dedicated to sports since a young age. The IOC has defended its decision to allow Khelif to compete, stating that athletes should only be excluded from women’s competition if there are clear fairness or safety issues.
Khelif’s victory has inspired young female boxers in Algeria, with many at the Tiaret boxing club rallying behind their champion and defending her against detractors. Despite the challenges and controversy surrounding her participation, Khelif remains focused on her goal of winning a medal for Algeria and proving herself as a champion in the boxing ring.
