Second gentleman Doug Emhoff admitted to having an affair during his previous marriage to ex-wife Kerstin Emhoff, which led to the end of their 16-year marriage in 2008. Emhoff, now married to Vice President Kamala Harris, disclosed the affair to Harris before they wed in 2014, and the circumstances were also disclosed to President Joe Biden’s vetting committee when Harris was being considered as a running-mate in 2020. Emhoff, 59, has two adult children with his ex-wife and they have maintained a friendly relationship, with Kerstin expressing pride in the blended family they have created with Kamala Harris. Despite the past controversy, Emhoff has been an enthusiastic supporter of Harris on the campaign trail, defending her against criticism and focusing on prosecuting the case against former President Donald Trump. Emhoff and Harris have worked through the challenges in their own family and Emhoff’s past actions, coming out stronger on the other side.
