Russia has pledged humanitarian assistance to North Korea after devastating floods caused extensive damage to thousands of homes and potentially claimed the lives of hundreds of people. President Vladimir Putin expressed his condolences and offered support to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un following the disastrous record downpour that hit the country on 27 July.
North Korea’s state media reported that Kim Jong-un has already taken measures to conduct recovery work in the affected areas and would ask for further aid if necessary. Despite the damage caused by heavy rains, Kim accused South Korean media of spreading rumors about the extent of the damage and casualties from the floods.
South Korea has also offered to provide humanitarian assistance to North Korean disaster victims, though the North Korean leadership has criticized reports that suggested a high number of casualties. The recent floods have strained diplomatic relations between North Korea and South Korea, as well as highlighting the close ties between North Korea and Russia.
North Korea and Russia have been allies for decades, with recent diplomatic exchanges and agreements strengthening their strategic partnership. Despite the challenges caused by the flooding, the international community is stepping in to offer support and assistance to the people affected by the disaster.
