Elizabeth Taylor’s suicide attempt during her marriage to Eddie Fisher

Elizabeth Taylor’s tumultuous marriage to Eddie Fisher is explored in the new HBO documentary “Elizabeth Taylor: The Lost Tapes.” The documentary features interviews between Taylor and journalist Richard Meryman from 1964 to 1965, where she candidly discusses her suicide attempt while married to Fisher, calling their union “one big friggin’ awful mistake.”

Fisher and Taylor’s relationship began with an affair while Fisher was still married to Debbie Reynolds. They married only three hours after Fisher’s divorce was finalized, and the marriage lasted four years before ending in divorce in 1964. Taylor revealed in the documentary that she attempted suicide by taking sleeping pills in front of Fisher, stating she would rather be dead than face divorce, even though she later found the act self-indulgent.

Taylor, who had three children from previous marriages, never loved Fisher and acknowledged the relationship as a mistake. Despite marrying Fisher, she was involved in an affair with her “Cleopatra” co-star and two-time husband, Richard Burton, whom she married after divorcing Fisher. Director Nanette Burstein commented on Taylor and Fisher’s relationship, noting Taylor’s lack of interest in the marriage.

Todd Fisher, the son of Eddie Fisher and Debbie Reynolds, discussed Taylor’s affair with his father in a previous interview, reflecting on the scandalous nature of the situation. Taylor, who was married seven times, passed away in 2011 at the age of 79. The documentary is now available for streaming on HBO Max.
