Trump allies are skeptical of Harris’ connection to the Black community

Vice President Kamala Harris, the first Black woman and person of South Asian descent on a major party ticket, faced criticism from Donald Trump and his supporters during a rally in Atlanta. Trump dismissed Harris as a “DEI hire,” insinuating that her race and gender were the sole reasons for her historic achievements. Many supporters, including people of color, echoed this sentiment, accusing Democrats of playing the race card to win votes.

During the rally, Trump and his surrogates attacked Harris, labeling her as weak, failed, and dangerously liberal. They also questioned her racial identity, suggesting she only identified as Black when it was convenient. Despite Harris’s Jamaican and Indian heritage and attendance at a historically Black college, some supporters expressed doubts about her connection to the Black community.

While Trump has tried to court Black voters, the majority of attendees at the rally were white. Some Black supporters defended Trump, citing his ability to make business deals with foreign countries as a reason for their support. Others believed that the Democratic Party was using Harris’s race to distract from her qualifications, with one man from Nicaragua claiming she lacked the intellectual preparation to run the country.

Overall, the rally highlighted the ongoing debate over Harris’s identity and qualifications, as well as the role of race in American politics.
