Team USA’s Bobby Finke made history by breaking a 12-year-old world record to win his second straight Olympic gold medal in the men’s 1,500m freestyle at the Tokyo Olympics. Finke set a new world mark of 14:30.67, beating the previous record set by China’s Sun Yang in 2012. The American led the race from the start and managed to keep a comfortable lead over silver medallist Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy. Daniel Wiffen of Ireland took home the bronze.

In another thrilling event, Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden claimed her second gold medal of the Olympics by winning the women’s 50m freestyle. Sjostrom’s time of 23.71 seconds was just shy of her own world record set in 2023. She dominated the race from the beginning, leaving her competitors behind. Meg Harris of Australia won the silver, while Zhang Yufei of China took home the bronze.

Both swimmers displayed incredible talent and determination in their races, cementing their status as Olympic champions. Finke’s impressive performance in breaking the record and defending his title, along with Sjostrom’s commanding victory in the 50m freestyle, added excitement to the final night of swimming events at the Tokyo Olympics. The athletes’ achievements will surely be remembered as highlights of the Games.
