American gymnastics star, Simone Biles, fell off the balance beam in the women’s artistic gymnastics individual balance beam finals at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, denying her a chance at a medal. Biles slipped and fell towards the end of her routine, receiving a score of 13.100 and tying for fourth place with her teammate Sunisa Lee. Italy’s Alice D’Amato took the gold, with Zhou Yaqin of China earning silver and Manila Esposito of Italy winning bronze.
Despite the disappointment on the balance beam, Biles still has a chance to compete in the floor final later in the day, where she has never lost a major international competition. With 10 medals in her Olympic career, including seven golds, Biles has the opportunity to tie Czechoslovakia’s Vera Caslavska for the second-most medals by a female gymnast in Olympic history. Biles hinted at a possible return for the next Olympics in Los Angeles, saying “Never say never. Next Olympics are at home. So you never know. I am getting really old.”
While Biles’ future remains uncertain, her teammate Sunisa Lee, who also fell during her routine, will leave Paris with three medals. As the gymnastics events continue, all eyes are on Biles to see if she can add to her remarkable Olympic legacy.
