Several people sustained burns in a grocery store chain in Plymouth after a deep fryer exploded on Thursday evening. The incident occurred at a Market Basket on Commerce Way, prompting a response from the Plymouth Fire Department. The fryer shot hot oil towards the ceiling, reaching up to 15 feet away from the source. Three individuals, including an 11-month-old baby, a 31-year-old employee, and a 79-year-old man, were evaluated for burns by firefighters.
The 79-year-old man was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston for severe burns, while the other two victims were taken to South Shore Hospital. Market Basket has not yet provided a comment on the incident. The explosion caused panic and chaos in the store, leading to injuries among customers and staff present at the time of the accident.
This unfortunate event highlights the dangers of deep fryers and the importance of proper safety measures in commercial kitchens. It serves as a reminder for businesses to prioritize employee training in handling equipment like fryers to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future. The swift response from the fire department helped in assessing and providing medical attention to the injured individuals. Market Basket management may face scrutiny for potential safety lapses leading to the explosion.
