Twelve athletes with New England ties have brought home medals from the Olympics so far. Stephen Nedoroscik and Frederick Richard, both from Massachusetts, won bronze in gymnastics. Other athletes from the region, such as Jayson Tatum and Breanna Stewart, have also been performing well in basketball and field hockey, respectively. Harvard alum Kristen Faulkner surprised everyone by winning a gold medal in cycling, while Liam Corrigan and Henry Hollingsworth secured a gold and bronze medal, respectively, in rowing.
In fencing, Lauren Scruggs became the first Black woman to win an individual medal in Olympic fencing, and the USA also won gold in the team event. Rugby sevens saw New England natives Kristi Kirshe and Ilona Maher help the US women’s team secure a bronze medal.
Despite not medaling, athletes like Jennifer Mucino Fernandez in archery, Jessica Paratto in diving, and Andy Macdonald in skateboarding represented New England well in their respective events. Alyssa Naher in soccer is hoping to guide the US women’s national team to a gold medal.
As the Olympics enter their final week, more athletes from New England, such as Stu McNay in sailing, have the opportunity to add to the region’s medal count. The achievements of these athletes highlight the talent and diversity of the sporting community in New England.
