Former Major League Baseball player and LGBTQ+ advocate Billy Bean has passed away at the age of 60 after a battle with acute myeloid leukemia. Bean, who publicly came out as gay in 1999, had a successful baseball career playing for teams like the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Diego Padres. He was also a two-time All-American outfielder at Loyola Marymount University.
Bean joined MLB’s commissioner’s office in 2014 as the Ambassador for Inclusion, working to promote equality for all within the sport. He was later promoted to the position of senior vice president for diversity, equity, and inclusion. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred described Bean as a kind and respected individual who made a significant impact through his dedication to others.
In addition to his work with MLB, Bean wrote a book titled “Going the Other Way” and was a keynote speaker at various events. His advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and inclusion in sports inspired many and helped create a more supportive environment for individuals within the baseball community.
