Four Hyatt Regency workers in Milwaukee are facing charges in the death of D’Vontaye Mitchell, a Black man who was punched and beaten with a broom during a confrontation. The incident, which resulted in Mitchell’s death, led to charges against Todd Alan Erickson, Brandon LaDaniel Turner, Herbert T. Williamson, and Devin W. Johnson-Carson, who are each facing a charge of felony murder. The incident, which took place on June 30, drew comparisons to the murder of George Floyd in 2020. Mitchell’s family and attorney, Benjamin Crump, are relieved that charges have been filed but are determined to ensure justice is served.
The incident began when Mitchell ran through the Hyatt Regency lobby, entered a bathroom, and was subsequently pulled out by Turner. A struggle ensued, during which Mitchell was punched, dragged, and struck with a broom by hotel employees. Eventually, Mitchell was held down in the hotel driveway by the four men, resulting in his death. Surveillance video footage captured the incident and aided in the investigation.
The charges, filed after an extensive review of evidence, have brought some measure of hope to Mitchell’s family. They believe that the arrests are a step in the right direction, but are committed to fighting for justice and convictions for all involved in the encounter. Despite findings of drugs in Mitchell’s system, the family remains determined to seek accountability for his death.
