Teammate shares memories of champion point guard Frank W. Davies Jr.

Frank W. Davies Jr., a former basketball player from Springfield, Massachusetts, passed away at the age of 83 on June 28. Known as a skilled point guard, Davies led his team to a city championship in 1957-58. His ability to read the court and pass the ball where it needed to go earned him respect from teammates and friends alike.

Following his graduation from high school in 1959, Davies served in the U.S. Marine Corps before returning to Springfield, where he held various jobs and was known for his ability to keep things light and fun. He maintained connections with friends over the years, often running into fellow veterans at the local VA medical center.

Davies leaves behind his children, Marc Davies, Shawn Davies, Kelly Williams, Eric Davies, and Kale’ Harrold, as well as his late wife, Abbie Davies, who passed away in 2021. Abbie Davies was the first Black person to serve as a clerk magistrate in Massachusetts, and Buckingham Place, where the couple lived, was renamed in her honor in 2023 as Abbie Davies Way.

A celebration of Frank W. Davies Jr.’s life will take place at the Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Agawam on Friday at 3 p.m. Friends and family will gather to remember his contributions on and off the basketball court, as well as his lasting impact on those he connected with throughout his life.
