Arshad Nadeem of Pakistan made history by winning the country’s first-ever track and field Olympic gold medal in the men’s javelin final in Paris. Nadeem broke the Olympic record with a throw of 92.97m, dethroning defending champion Neeraj Chopra of India. With this victory, Pakistan ended a 32-year medal drought at the Games. Grenada’s Anderson Peters took the bronze medal.
Despite facing a knee injury earlier in the year and the lack of proper athletics facilities in Pakistan, Nadeem’s achievement was celebrated by his compatriots. The last Olympic medal for Pakistan was in 1992 when the men’s hockey team won bronze in Barcelona. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Nadeem for his historic win, while his mentor Rasheed Ahmad Saqi expressed pride and predicted Nadeem’s success.
Nadeem’s victory was a source of national pride, with supporters and family members celebrating in his hometown of Mian Channu.
