62 people killed in Brazil plane crash: Latest on investigation

A passenger plane carrying 62 people crashed in Brazil, killing all on board. The flight was operated by regional airline Voepass and was headed to São Paulo’s main international airport. The plane, an ATR-72 twin-engine turboprop, crashed in a residential neighborhood in Vinhedo, northwest of São Paulo. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the crash, with speculation that ice buildup on the plane or engine failure could be possible factors.

Despite the crash, no residents were injured, although one home in the condominium complex was damaged. As recovery efforts continue, at least 31 bodies have been recovered, and the victims are being mourned by their families. The black box of the plane, containing flight data and audio, is being analyzed by investigators.

The governor of the state of São Paulo has declared three days of mourning for the victims. ATR, the aircraft maker, is fully engaged with crash investigators to determine what happened. Relatives of the victims have been brought to São Paulo to provide DNA samples for identification purposes. Investigators are also looking at the plane’s de-icing system and other systems to understand what led to the tragic crash. The pilots did not report any emergency or adverse weather conditions before the crash, which occurred around 1:30 p.m. local time.
