Massachusetts State House to Close for Repairs Starting Next Week

The State House is set to close for a full power shutdown starting on Friday, Aug. 16, through Monday, Aug. 19, in order to address damage from last summer’s electrical fire. The closure will affect both staff and the public, as the capitol building and its underground parking garage will be inaccessible during this time. Employees have been asked to work off-site during the shutdown.

The House of Representatives, which typically meets on Mondays, will hold a session on Friday, Aug. 16, to fulfill a Constitutional requirement related to their meeting schedule. The closure is necessary for the replacement of power cables damaged in the July 2023 fire, which occurred when high-voltage wires feeding into a lower level of the building caught fire.

Spokesman Matt Murphy from Administration and Finance has confirmed the details of the shutdown, emphasizing the need for the temporary closure to address the damage from the previous fire. The State House will reopen on Monday, Aug. 19, after the repairs have been completed.

For the safety of all individuals and to ensure the necessary repairs are made, the State House will remain closed for the specified duration. This closure is a proactive measure to address the damage caused by the electrical fire, and steps are being taken to minimize disruption during this time.
