Uvalde, Texas reveals extensive collection of records concerning school shooting

The city of Uvalde, Texas, recently released a significant amount of records related to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in May 2022, marking the largest disclosure of documents since the incident. These records include body camera footage, dashcam video, 911 calls, text messages, and other redacted documents. The release came as part of a legal case brought by media outlets, including the Austin American-Statesman and its parent company Gannett.

The shooting at Robb Elementary resulted in the deaths of 19 fourth graders and two teachers, making it the worst mass shooting at an educational institution in Texas history. The gunman was armed with a military-style rifle and was eventually taken down by officers more than an hour after the attack began.

Despite a judge ruling in favor of news organizations requesting records from the shooting, the Texas Department of Public Safety has not yet released these records, citing objections from the Uvalde County District Attorney. The release of these records is pending while the matter is under appeal.

Law enforcement agencies have been criticized for their delayed response to the shooting, with surveillance footage showing heavily armed officers waiting outside the classrooms for 77 minutes before confronting and ultimately killing the gunman. The delayed response has raised questions about the effectiveness of the officers’ actions during the tragic event.
