Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas is close to rejoining the team after spending time rehabbing with the WooSox in Syracuse. Casas met with team doctors on Monday to discuss his progress after playing eight rehab games at Triple-A. While he may not be back in the lineup before the team leaves for a road trip on Wednesday, he could potentially be active this weekend in Baltimore. Casas has been performing well in rehab games, hitting .267 with an .822 OPS.
Shortstop Trevor Story also made progress in his recovery from shoulder surgery, taking batting practice on the field for the first time since his injury in April. While Story is not yet close to a rehab assignment, his return by the end of the year looks promising as he continues to progress with his recovery.
Unfortunately, two other players, Tyler O’Neill and Cooper Criswell, are experiencing delays in their return to the team. O’Neill is still recovering from a left leg infection, while Criswell is on the COVID IL and is not yet back with the team due to illness.
Late-inning relievers Liam Hendriks and Justin Slaten are also on different paths in their recovery journeys. Hendriks is close to a rehab assignment after his Tommy John surgery, while Slaten is still not throwing off a mound due to elbow inflammation. Despite these setbacks, the Red Sox are hopeful for the return of their injured players and the boost they will bring to the team.
