The Boston Parks and Recreation Commission has approved the demolition of the historic White Stadium in Franklin Park to make way for a new 11,000-seat professional women’s soccer stadium. Despite concerns from residents and an ongoing lawsuit, the city is moving forward with the project, which is expected to start in October. The city will contribute $50 million to the project, while Boston Unity Soccer Partners will contribute $30 million.
The new stadium will host about 20 soccer games per year and will be open to the public for other events and activities. While the final design is still pending approval, plans include renovations to the grandstands and a new building providing food and beverage facilities. The city’s Planning Department has approved a portion of the plans, with final approval expected this fall.
Mayor Michelle Wu has expressed support for the project, stating it will be a generational investment in Franklin Park. However, the Franklin Park Defenders, a group formed to oppose the project, have filed a lawsuit claiming the city is unlawfully transferring control of a public asset to a private organization. The lawsuit is ongoing, with a trial scheduled for March 2025.
Despite the controversy, the city maintains that partnering with Boston Unity Soccer Partners is necessary to complete the renovations. The new stadium is expected to benefit Boston Public Schools athletes, neighborhood residents, and the wider community.
