Ilhan Omar, member of the ‘Squad’ and critic of Israel, secures victory in Minnesota Democratic primary | Updates on US Election 2024

Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota’s 5th congressional district has emerged victorious in her primary election against former Minneapolis City Council member Don Samuels. With 56.2% of the vote, Omar successfully defended her seat, securing another term in office.

Omar, known for being part of the progressive House group known as the “Squad” and for her outspoken criticism of Israel’s actions in Gaza, celebrated her victory by emphasizing themes of joy and community in her speech to supporters in Minneapolis. She highlighted her commitment to fighting for housing and healthcare as human rights, as well as for a peaceful and equitable world.

Samuels, who had received 42.9% of the vote, criticized Omar’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, accusing her of being one-sided and divisive. Despite his disappointment in the outcome, Samuels acknowledged the impact of money in politics, noting that he had hoped grassroots effort would overcome funding disparities.

The primary loss of fellow “Squad” members Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush, who were defeated in their respective races against opponents with support from pro-Israel groups like AIPAC, highlights a shift in the Democratic Party away from more left-wing causes. Yet, Omar, who has faced criticism for past anti-Jewish remarks, remains firm in delivering federal funds for community development in her district and advocating for immigrant communities like the Somali population in her district.

Omar’s victory signals continued support for her progressive agenda among her constituents, setting the stage for her to continue championing her bold and visionary politics in Congress.
