A recent poll conducted by USA TODAY/Suffolk University/WSVN-TV found that more than half of Floridians support overturning a state abortion ban, with 58% supporting a constitutional amendment that would allow first- and second-trimester abortions or even later to protect the health of patients. The amendment is set to appear on November’s ballot, and although it requires 60% of voters to approve, the race is too close to call. The poll showed that women, regardless of party affiliation, are driving the trend in support of abortion rights, with 64% of all women in Florida supporting the amendment. Additionally, Black respondents were more likely to support abortion than white respondents, with Hispanic respondents falling in the middle.
Interestingly, many poll respondents who support abortion rights also support Republican Donald Trump’s re-election effort, despite the former president’s appointment of Supreme Court justices who have voted to overturn abortion rights at the federal level. Experts suggest that abortion is a “gut level issue” that may cause voters to split their ticket when it comes to voting for a presidential candidate. The poll also revealed that Florida women are more concerned about being able to access abortion than men, with 60% of women of reproductive age expressing concerns about their ability to access abortion if needed to preserve their life or health.
Polling data from other states, such as Arizona, show similar trends in support for abortion rights, with concerns over potential bans affecting future pregnancies. Nationally, the majority of respondents oppose leaving abortion policy up to individual states, indicating a desire for a uniform approach to abortion rights across the country.
