Woodstock music festival kicks off on August 15 in Boston – Boston Herald

On August 15, 2024, history was revisited as it marked the 55th anniversary of the iconic Woodstock Music and Art Fair. This three-day festival, held in upstate New York in 1969, attracted over 460,000 attendees and left an indelible mark on American music and culture.

In other historical events on this date, Macbeth, King of Scots, was killed in battle by Malcolm in 1057. The Panama Canal officially opened in 1914, while in 1935 humorist Will Rogers and aviator Wiley Post tragically perished in a plane crash. India gained independence from British rule in 1947, and in 1961, the Berlin Wall construction began as an East German soldier defected to the West.

Moving forward in time, in 1989, F.W. de Klerk assumed the role of acting president of South Africa after P.W. Botha’s resignation. In a tragic event, 29 people lost their lives in a car bombing in Omagh, Northern Ireland in 1998.

In a more recent event, on this same day in 2017, President Donald Trump made controversial remarks about the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

On a lighter note, today also marks the birthdays of several notable personalities, including actor Jim Dale, retired Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, and actor Debra Messing. Additionally, Britain’s Princess Anne and celebrity chef Tom Colicchio celebrate their birthdays today.

As we fondly look back on the events of August 15 in history, we are reminded of the significant milestones and individuals who have shaped our world.
