Ramone Jamarr Alston, a prisoner convicted of murder, was captured at a hotel in Kannapolis, North Carolina, after escaping from correction officers during a hospital appointment. His female acquaintance, Jacobia Crisp, was also arrested for aiding and abetting a fugitive. Alston will be charged with felony escape from prison and will resume serving his life sentence for first-degree murder.
Authorities expressed gratitude for the collaborative effort of numerous local, state, and federal public safety officers involved in Alston’s capture. The operation included FBI Charlotte SWAT agents, Kannapolis Police, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police. Alston was taken into custody without incident.
Alston was originally serving a life sentence at Bertie Correctional Institution for fatally shooting a 1-year-old girl, Maleah Williams, in Chapel Hill in 2015. Maleah was shot in the head while playing outside her godparents’ apartment in a drive-by shooting. Alston and his friend, Pierre Je Bron Moore, both took plea deals, with Moore receiving a prison sentence of 28 to 34 years.
The extensive search for Alston involved hundreds of law enforcement officials and public safety officers. He will now face charges for his escape and continue serving his life sentence for his previous murder conviction.
