In Thursday night’s preseason game against the Eagles, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye showcased his skills by leading the team on two scoring drives, despite the 14-13 loss. Maye impressed with his passing and rushing abilities, gaining a total of 62 yards and showing poise under pressure. The defense also showed promise following the Matthew Judon trade, with five total sacks on the night.
While Maye shined, veteran Jacoby Brissett struggled in limited action, completing only three passes and throwing an interception. Rookie QBs Joe Milton III and Bailey Zappe also saw playing time, with mixed results.
The offensive line showed improvement from previous outings, but there were still some issues with protection, leading to sacks and turnovers. Rookie tackle Caedan Wallace had a solid performance, but there is room for improvement overall.
Rookie wideouts Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker showed flashes of talent, but drops were an issue. The special teams unit, led by kicker Joey Slye, had a strong showing with two successful field goals.
The Patriots were without several key players due to injury, including Hunter Henry and Kyle Dugger. Undrafted free agent JaQuae Jackson suffered a serious injury during the game, adding to the team’s woes.
Despite the loss, there were positives to take away from the game, including Maye’s performance and the defense’s ability to generate pressure. As the team looks ahead to the regular season, there is still work to be done to address various areas of concern and fine-tune the roster.
