Fede Alvarez, known for his horror-thriller “Don’t Breathe,” is back with “Alien: Romulus,” the fifth installment in the “Alien” saga. Set 20 years after the original film, it follows a group of young protagonists on a mission to escape a Weyland-Yutani Corporation-run colony. The story is a bridge to a trilogy and features familiar elements from the franchise. The characters, except for Rain (played by Cailee Spaeny) and Andy (David Jonsson), are forgettable, but the film saves a surprising twist for the end. Directed by Alvarez, the movie is a mix of thrilling and unsettling moments, and Spaeny delivers a compelling performance as the tough heroine. Despite some flaws, “Alien: Romulus” is an exciting addition to the franchise, sure to please fans of the series. The film, rated R for bloody violence and language, is currently playing in select theaters and has received a grade of B-.
